Water dispensers are one of the most advanced features used in modern refrigerators. You can easily get cold water from your refrigerator, thanks to this feature. It’s a time and energy-saving system. So, your Whirlpool refrigerator water dispenser not working can be a real upset for you.

To fix the Whirlpool refrigerator water dispenser not working issue, you can install a new dispenser tube or straighten the old one, replace the water filter if it’s faulty, increase the water pressure, thaw the waterline, and if necessary, replace the control board.

Let’s see in-depth, how you can fix your water dispenser not working issue.

Whirlpool Refrigerator Water Dispenser Not Working

There can be many reasons why your Whirlpool refrigerator water dispenser is not working. Sometimes the dispenser stops working completely, and sometimes it spills water everywhere. The water filter might be faulty too, allowing only a small amount of water to be dispensed from the refrigerator.

Here are some possible reasons for a faulty water dispenser:

  • A faulty dispenser tube
  • Clogged waterline
  • Problems with the water filter
  • Inappropriate water pressure.
  • A faulty power switch
  • Broken Door switch
  • Problems with the control board

Let’s talk about some easy fixing methods to solve this problem.

Whirlpool Refrigerator Water Dispenser Not Working

Whirlpool Refrigerator Water Dispenser Not Working After Replacing Filter

Many problems with refrigerator water systems can be traced back to water filters. Each refrigerator model does have a unique water filter or mechanism. Problems can arise here as the water filter is placed inside the socket connecting the waterline with the refrigerator.

Examine to detect if the water filter is bent or hooked halfway, causing uneven water flow. It’s also possible that this caused leakage or overflow close to the water filter. Your water filter’s package lid may still be on, fully stopping water flow.

The water filter could perhaps be too old. A faulty water filter may contaminate the water as well as hinder it from being filtered. This raises the risk of a blockage from grainy elements that are normally filtered.

If you haven’t replaced your water filter for the last six months, do it just to be safe, and make sure to go through the user’s guide for your refrigerator’s model.

If you have installed a new water filter and it’s not working, make sure to check if you have installed it properly. Buy the water filter for the exact model. Call a professional repairman if it doesn’t work anymore.

Fixing The Water Tube

The tube of the dispenser could possibly be the reason if your refrigerator water dispenser appears to be obstructed or is squirting somewhere at the dispensing port. A tube made of plastic mainly connects the water dispenser with the waterline.

Another one could be present, from which the water drips into your cup. Examine if the tube is blocked, damaged, or bent at any point. If you find it to be crooked, try straightening it out. Replace the essential part of the tube if it’s broken.

Clearing The Water Line

Check for a blockage if you have poor pressure, uneven dispensing, or even a shortage of water. Clogs can be present due to any fault throughout the waterline, starting from the water filter. Examine different parts of the waterline, as well as the elements that carry water inside it.

For clogs, the flow of water helps to determine if there’s any blockage in the line. If a blockage is discovered, it may typically be removed by passing a mixture of baking soda and vinegar into the pipe. There could be a blockage in the tube due to a bend.

Problems With Water Pressure

Are you only receiving a small drop from your refrigerator’s water dispenser? If the problem isn’t caused by a blockage or a hose twist, it’s most likely due to low water pressure. To find the source of the issue, check the water pressure in different parts of the system.

Firstly, examine the waterline because this is where the water comes first. If there’s a lack of pressure in the waterline, the dispenser won’t be able to generate any extra water pressure. If you find out that there’s appropriate pressure inside the refrigerator but the water dispenser is lacking pressure, either a blockage or a leak will be discovered.

Thaw The Waterline

Water lines are commonly routed to different compartments of the refrigerator to provide both ice and water. Nevertheless, there is a probability of ice damming inside the line, which might cause issues for the water dispenser.

By opening the door of the freezer, examine the ice machine and waterline for frost within the tubes. Use a hair drier to easily defrost the blocked tube, or you can unplug the refrigerator and leave it for some hours.

Problems With The Pressure Switch

After you’ve thoroughly inspected the water tubes, check the pressure switch, as it could be the root cause of the problem. You get water from the dispenser by pressing on the pressure switch.

It might be a small switch hidden under a movable plate or a huge lever. If the pressure switch is damaged or unplugged, you will not be able to pour water from your dispenser. Luckily, changing or repairing the switch is a simple technical procedure.

Problems With The Control Board

The control board is the most essential part of the water dispenser. This is where the main coordination of the refrigerator is done. If you have tried all the troubleshooting methods mentioned above, then the problem may relate to the main control board.

Unfortunately, if the control board is at fault, you won’t be able to fix it.

Whirlpool Refrigerator Water Dispenser Works Slowly

If your Whirlpool refrigerator water dispenser is pouring a small amount of water, there could be a possible clog inside the system. Usually, clogs are found inside the waterline or the water filter.

Slow water pressure can also lead to this problem. To troubleshoot this problem, find out where the problem originated from and go through the troubleshooting mentioned above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why is my Whirlpool fridge not dispensing water?

There can be many reasons why your Whirlpool fridge is not dispensing water. Problems can be associated with the dispenser system itself or with the supporting system of the refrigerator.

New whirlpool side by side refrigerator. Water from dispenser not cold. Temperature inside fridge is appropriate. Refrigerator has been running for weeks. Everything else is working fine. Does the coiled plastic tubing attached to the inside back wall of fridge have anything to do with it?

Hey Bob! Thanks for reaching out. It’s great that your new Whirlpool refrigerator is mostly working well. The plastic tubing on the inside back wall is likely the water line for the dispenser, but it shouldn’t affect the temperature.

If the water from the dispenser isn’t cold, it might be a separate issue. Check if there’s a specific temperature setting for the water in your refrigerator. If there isn’t, the dispenser might not be connected to the cooling system.

Another thing to look at is the water supply line. Make sure it’s not exposed to warm air or sunlight, as that can affect the water temperature. Also, check if the refrigerator has a water reservoir or tank – if it does, it could take some time for the water to cool down after the refrigerator has been running for a while.

If all else seems fine and the water still isn’t cold, it might be worth contacting Whirlpool customer support. They can provide more specific guidance based on your refrigerator model.

Hope this helps, and let me know if you have any more questions!
